I hope by then I can put to rest
all the evidence of the interest compounding
when keeping your eyes on just the cure
you'd believe that the tide of death is surely stemming
but fortunes all flip like the rippling sand
and all of us can't be Alexander Fleming

and broomsticks and knitting needles
safety pins and butter-knives
have relatives in other realms whose purpose is to shorten lives
and each day a new invention threatens how our state survives
it benefits the cautious and the rich
to spare the broomstick and burn the witch

there's many a mind and acumen
researching the spell that conjured penicillin
but incentives all push in the opposite way
and it's easier far to yield and play the villain
as industry moves at a furious pace
all the median masses run to race stagnation
and anything left worth asking why
is impossible or effects annihilation

and broomsticks and knitting needles
safety pins and butter-knives
take space and draw attention
from the bigger pictures in our lives
and each day an intervention lectures us to mind the hives
and celebrate the cautious and the rich
who spare the broomstick and burn the witch

how remote and strange is the future in our sights
vehicles of change flash their moral hazard lights
lost and paranoid, fearful of our deepest wants
teach us to avoid paths of least la résistance

investing in the impulse to collect and stash the earth away
and each year our institutions claim that only gold can stay
and if we all agree we get consumer fraud protections
